Westport Athletics Club competed in the Woodie’s DIY All Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships, which took place last Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th July in the Tullamore Harriers stadium.

On Saturday Alannah Gannon literally ‘fell at the last hurdle’ in the U14 girls 80m hurdles, but this did not stop this fantastic athlete coming back on Sunday and winning gold in the U14 High Jump (jointly with Aisling Keady-Cummin from Craughwell AC) with a brilliant jump of 1.54m.  In the U14 boys hammer Cian O’Farrell came 8th with a throw of 25.52m and 13th in the U14 boys javelin with a throw of 21.19m.  Kate O’Malley also had a great day just shy of a medal coming fourth in the U13 girls shot putt with a throw of 9.27m and also coming 10th in the U13 girls javelin with a throw of 16.36m.  Jennifer Chambers took seventh place in the U14 girls javelin with a throw of 20.02m and 10th in the U14 girls discus with a throw of 17.18m.  Ava-Lynne Kane took 10th place in the U12 girls 600m in a time of 2:01.60.  In the U13 boys 600m after a fine start Patrick Chambers unfortunately had a fall shortly into the race.  In the U18 boys 800m Jason Gavin took 12th position with a time of 2:05.38.  In the same race David Harper ran a superb race to take home the silver medal in a time of 1:57.73.

The second weekend of the All Ireland finals take place in Tullamore on the 28th/29th July.
