The first weekend of Woodie’s DIY Juvenile All Ireland Track and Field Championships for U12-U19 took place last weekend in Tullamore. The event saw Ireland’s top up and coming athletes in action, battling it out for a coveted national title. The athletes had come come through tough qualifying competitions at regional level in order to earn a place in the national finals and it was an exciting weekend of athletics.
Six athletes from Westport AC competed across the two days.
Saturday morning saw Adam Sheridan compete in the U12 boys Shot Putt throwing a fantastic 10.51m resulting in the gold medal for this fine young thrower. Adam is definitely one to watch in the future. Later in the day Cillian Heaney competed in the U12 boys 60m sprint reaching the finals and finishing in 8th place in a fine time of 8.79secs.
More fine performances followed on Sunday when Saoirse O'Brien finished 8th in the U12 girls 600m, Aisling Halpin Fahy 7th in the U13 girls javelin with an excellent throw of 16.50m, Ava Lynne Kane finished 10th in the U13 girls 600m in a time of 1:54.43 and Jason Gavin 8th in the U19 boys 400m in a time of 53.11secs.
The second weekend of the competition will be held the weekend of July 20th/21st, again in Tullamore.
