Westport AC athletes put in some tremendous performances at the Connaught Cross Country Championship for Uneven Ages, held at Creagh, Ballinasloe recently. Our U11 girls got the day off to a flying start in their 1500m race with both Roisin O’Brien(running out of age) and Alyssa Shackelton winning silver county medals. The U11 team was also made up of Niamh Shanahan, Alisha Eade Kalala and Nora Holmes, who all ran their hearts out. Next up was the U11 boys 1500m where Malcolm McEvilly came storming home in first place. He was followed closely by Shane O’Malley who won the silver. Next home for the team was Ted Horan, Conal Dawson(running out of age), Sean Heaney(also out of age) and Richard O’Donnell, all of whose excellent performances led to this fine team winning silver for Westport and also county silver for Mayo.
In the U13 girls 2500m Saoirse O’Brien once again put in an amazing performance taking the silver while running out of age and strongly contributing to a county gold medal for Mayo. Her teammates, who all ran extremely well were Anna O’Riain, Ava-Lynne Kane and Sarah Staunton. Westport AC gained another individual silver medal with Luke Dawson coming second in the U13 Boys 2500m. Luke was followed closely by Cillian Heaney, who ran a fantastic race out of age and came home in fourth place. Rossa McAllister, again running out of age was next home for the team(9th), while their teammates Sean Doherty and Oisin Ryall(running out of age) chased home at great speed leading this fine team to win the team gold medal and aiding Mayo to win the county gold.
Next up was the U15 girls 3500m race where Aoife O’Brien won her second Connaught cross country title this season, once again winning gold both as an individual and for the Mayo county team. The U15 boys 3500m race followed with some excellent performances from Aaron Doherty taking the individual bronze, followed closely by Cian McAllister in 4th place (both of whom were running out of age), together with their teammates Eoghan McLoughlin, Alex O’Riain, Andrew Currid and Ben Walsh winning an impressive silver medal for the club and all contributing to the county also winning silver.
Our last, but not least, juvenile athlete of the day was Sorcha McAllister, running out of age, in the U17 girls 4000m running a fine race taking home the bronze medal.
