Nineteen Westport AC U9-U11 athletes travelled to Finn Valley Athletic Centre in Donegal last Saturday to compete in the Woodie’s DIY All Ireland Track and Field Championships. The competition consists of a team of two athletes from each club competing together against all other clubs, where the teammate’s combined scores in each event determine their overall finishing position. All of the athletes who have reached the National finals have already been through tough county and provincial qualifying championships.
The first medal of the day went to the U9 boys sprinting team of Adam Nugent and Ryan Mulchrone who ran their hearts out taking a bronze medal in a very competitive race. The next medals went to the U10 girls Turbo Javelin throwers Emily Chambers and Maggie Chambers who threw brilliantly resulting in the gold medal for these girls.
In the middle distance races Adam Nugent, this time teamed with Fionn O’Ruain stormed home to win a silver medal for the team in the U9 boys 300m.. The U9 girls long jump saw the team of Leila O’Malley and Olivia Costello jumping their all-time best and winning gold for the team.
