WESTPORT AC EXCELS IN CONNACHT SCHOOLS TRACK AND FIELD

Westport Athletics Club was very well represented at the 76th Aviva
Connacht Schools Athletics Championships held at Athlone IT on Thursday
May 19th.
In the Minor Girls Sophie Letourmey came third in both the Long Jump (4.13m) and High Jump (1.40m). In the Junior Girls High Jump Aoife Gannon took first place with a jump of 1.40m. The Sacred Heart School Girls excelled in the Intermediate Girls with Ellen Moran winning the 1500m in a time of 5.01.2 almost 14 seconds ahead of her second place opponent. Deena Sadik took fourth place in the 2000m Walk in a time of 10.43.7. Katie Hyland came second in the Long Jump with a jump of 4.65m. Cathy McKenna won the Javelin with a throw of 27.89m – over 10m further than her second place opponent. Ellen, Deena, Katie and Cathy then joined forces to take third position in the 4x100m relay in a time of 54.4sec. Their tremendous success lead the Sacred Heart School to take first place in the Intermediate Girls Shield. Further success was had in the Intermediate Girls with Niamh McLoughlin (McHale College) taking first place in the Shot Putt with a throw of 9.92m, over 2m ahead of her nearest rival. Niamh also came third in the Javelin with a throw of 14.86m.
In the Intermediate Boys David Harper took second place in the 800m in a time of 1.58.6. Con Doherty also took second place in the 3000m in a time of 9.32.0. In the field events Brendan McLoughlin came fourth with a throw of 10.10m. In the Senior Boys Anthony Chambers came fourth in both the 800m and 1500m in times of 2.02.4 and 4.23.4 respectively.
Congratulations to all athletes and good luck in the All Ireland finals, which take place in Tullamore on June 4th.
