Westport AC Host National "B" Championship

Westport AC was so proud to host the National "B" Championships in the amazing grounds of Westport House on Sunday 9th February.  The event went off in style with over 1,000 athletes entered and thousands of spectators enjoying the fast paced racing in the amazing grounds of Westport House on a crisp dry February day. The feedback from Athletics Ireland has been amazing, it was a great day for Westport AC.

We would like to thank The Hughes Family and all the staff of Westport House for all their support for this event which has been lauded by clubs the length and breath of the country. 

A special mention has to go to the Subcommittee that worked so hard over the past few weeks and months to pull it all together, Angela Corduff, Sean Sweeney, Ann Marie Walsh, Irene Riordan, and Padraig Corduff, who all took on their roles without any hesitation and worked tirelessly to make sure everything got done. 

Thank you to all our juvenile members who were not afraid to pull up their sleeves and get stuck in. From collecting litter, manning the information tent, running back and forth with results, on clickers counting the spectators, and delivering soup and sandwiches to our volunteers and anything else they were asked to do. Every child we asked to do a job did it without a word of complaint and was only eager to help. It is a credit to those children and their parents.

There were volunteers from so many groups, our own Westport AC athletes, parents, coaches and committee members, Westport GAA and Westport LGFA and St Anne's Boxing Club.  We are indebted to Padraig Corduff and Corduff Travel for all their assistance with organising the parking for the day and the local schools along with Westport GAA and Westport United for making their car parks available to us.

It was lovely to see all the club athletes competing on home soil and a huge congrats to all those who won medals some their first National Medal and where better to win it than in their own hometown.


Westport AC is the largest Juvenile Athletics club in Mayo and the seventh largest in Ireland in the latest Athletics Ireland club membership report.  Out of the 366 affiliated clubs with Athletics Ireland, Westport AC is currently 20th overall.

We currently have 432 juvenile members, in September 2023 we had 288 juvenile members so a growth of 50% in just over a year with total club membership of 550 and climbing each week. 


This growth is in no small part to our wonderful team of coaches who are nurturing our athletes and giving them space to enjoy getting fit in a fun way. 


We have also had huge investment in our facilities in Horkan's Hill and are eagerly awaiting a tartan track in the coming months. 


We are forever indebted to the generosity and support of so many wonderful businesses and individuals in our Community.

Aoife O'Brien Earns International Call Up

July 7, 2016


The GloHealth Tailteann Games took place in Morton Stadium on June 25th last. Athletes from schools in Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster competed in this U17 age category for provincial honours.  Our own Aoife O'Brien representing Sacred Heart School, finished in an impressive 3rd position in the grueling 1500m steeplechase event.  As a result Aoife has earned the honour of representing Ireland in the schools international in Kent, England on July 16th. Best of luck Aoife when you proudly wear the green Irish vest.

Connacht Track and Field Championships Sligo 18th June 2016

15 Athletes travelled to the Connacht Track and Field Championships in Sligo, a total of 17 Medals were won (10 Gold, 6 Silver, 1 Bronze) Well Done to all Athletes.

WESTPORT AC ATHLETES SHINE IN ALL IRELAND SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP'S

Congratulations to Saoirse O'Brien SHS on winning GOLD in the Junior Girls 1500m at the All Ireland Schools Track and Field Athletics Championships in Tullamore on Saturday. A great year for Saoirse who is also All Ireland Schools Cross Country Champion from March this year. 

Adam Sheridan, Rice College, took home two National Medals from Tullamore.

C & C Cellular/Mayo Athletic U9 – U11 Team Events

The C & C Cellular/Mayo Athletic U9 – U11 Team Events took place in Claremorris at the weekend.  Ten clubs from Mayo competed in the championships.  Two new clubs – Erris and Moy Valley competed for the first time.  Athletics in Mayo is proving more popular all the time with five new clubs in the past few years.  Thanks to all who officiated on the day, the Civil Defence and the committee of Claremorris Atheltic Club for providing us with refreshments. Westport Athletes Shine At All-Ireland Indoor Championships

It was back to the magnificent Athlone indoor arena on the 12th and 13th of March for the Westport athletes who recently qualified for the All-Ireland indoor championships.  This is the same indoor arena which recently hosted the AIT International Grand Prix.  On that occasion, IAAF world championship silver medallist Melissa Bishop set a new Canadian indoor record for the 800m.  Her fellow countryman and pole-vault world-champion Shawn Barber set a stadium record of 5.79m, while Dawit Wolde ...

Westport Athletes do club proud in Connaught Indoors in Athlone

Westport athletes took home a total of 12 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals at the Connaught Indoor Championships over the weekend of February 21st and 22nd.  In addition to this haul of individual medals, the impressive U12 girls 4x100m relay team of Leila O’Malley, Lilas Houalet, Sarah Mulroy and Claire Conway also romped home in style in 1st place.  The state of the art indoor arena of AIT was the venue for these championships.  This is truly a magnificent arena which all young athletes...
