Westport AC Host National "B" Championship

Westport AC was so proud to host the National "B" Championships in the amazing grounds of Westport House on Sunday 9th February.  The event went off in style with over 1,000 athletes entered and thousands of spectators enjoying the fast paced racing in the amazing grounds of Westport House on a crisp dry February day. The feedback from Athletics Ireland has been amazing, it was a great day for Westport AC.

We would like to thank The Hughes Family and all the staff of Westport House for all their support for this event which has been lauded by clubs the length and breath of the country. 

A special mention has to go to the Subcommittee that worked so hard over the past few weeks and months to pull it all together, Angela Corduff, Sean Sweeney, Ann Marie Walsh, Irene Riordan, and Padraig Corduff, who all took on their roles without any hesitation and worked tirelessly to make sure everything got done. 

Thank you to all our juvenile members who were not afraid to pull up their sleeves and get stuck in. From collecting litter, manning the information tent, running back and forth with results, on clickers counting the spectators, and delivering soup and sandwiches to our volunteers and anything else they were asked to do. Every child we asked to do a job did it without a word of complaint and was only eager to help. It is a credit to those children and their parents.

There were volunteers from so many groups, our own Westport AC athletes, parents, coaches and committee members, Westport GAA and Westport LGFA and St Anne's Boxing Club.  We are indebted to Padraig Corduff and Corduff Travel for all their assistance with organising the parking for the day and the local schools along with Westport GAA and Westport United for making their car parks available to us.

It was lovely to see all the club athletes competing on home soil and a huge congrats to all those who won medals some their first National Medal and where better to win it than in their own hometown.


Westport AC is the largest Juvenile Athletics club in Mayo and the seventh largest in Ireland in the latest Athletics Ireland club membership report.  Out of the 366 affiliated clubs with Athletics Ireland, Westport AC is currently 20th overall.

We currently have 432 juvenile members, in September 2023 we had 288 juvenile members so a growth of 50% in just over a year with total club membership of 550 and climbing each week. 


This growth is in no small part to our wonderful team of coaches who are nurturing our athletes and giving them space to enjoy getting fit in a fun way. 


We have also had huge investment in our facilities in Horkan's Hill and are eagerly awaiting a tartan track in the coming months. 


We are forever indebted to the generosity and support of so many wonderful businesses and individuals in our Community.

FIVE NATIONAL TITLES FOR WESTPORT AC

Westport Athletics Club has a magnificent weekend at the Woodie's DIY Juvenile Indoor Championships at the Meadowbank Sports Arena in Magherafelt, Co. Derry.  Over 1000 athletes took part from all over the country in age groups from U12 to U19 categories in a wide range of running, throwing and jumping events.

Westport AC athletes had some excellent performances over the two days coming home with an impressive five National titles.  Saturday morning started with Alannah Gannon taking the gold in the girl's U13 High Jump by getting her first jumps in all the way up to 1.40m.  Later in the afternoon Ellen Moran took the lead early in the race and had a convincing win in the girl's U17 1500m. David Harper also excelled in the boy's U17 1500m by taking an early lead and stayed clear of the field right to the end of the race.  Alice Dever was next for gold in the U18 girl's Triple Jump improving her jump by 6cm from the Connaught Competition.  Anthony Chambers won silver in the boy's U18 1500m in what was a closely fought battle to the end.

We had further excellent performances for the day with Kate Chambers coming tenth in the girl's U12 Shot Putt, Ellen Noonan coming ninth in the U12 girl's High Jump, Patrick Chambers came home fifth in the boy's U12 600m followed by Cian McAllister eighth in the same race.  Alannah Gannon also came seventh in the girl's U13 60m Sprint, Tara McGreevy came eleventh in the girl's U13 Long Jump and Joe Dawson came home in eighth place in the U13 boy's 600m in what was his first national competition.

Sunday morning saw Westport AC taking yet another national title with Niamh McLoughlin winning the girl's U16 Shot putt making it her incredible fourth successive Indoor National Shot Putt title. Alannah Gannon took eighth place in the U13 girl's Hurdles.   Aoife Gannon just missed out on a medal taking an impressive fourth position in the U15 girl's High Jump, with Sophie Letourmey coming eighth in the same competition.  Aoife was also twelfth in the U15 girl's Shot Putt and Sophie came eighth in the U15 girl's Long Jump.  In the boy's U15 Shot Putt Brendan McLoughlin was in seventh position.

Congratulations to all athletes.  A tremendous weekend was had by all with more of our athletes competing in the second weekend of the National Indoor Championships in Nenagh on the weekend of April 2nd/3rd.

                           


                                   

                           
 

Westport Achieve Top Awards

The magnificent achievements by Westport athletes in 2010 were reflected in the number of awards won both individually and by the club at the annual Mayo Awards ceremony, sponsored by C&C Cellular and Vodafone  which was held in Park Hotel, Kiltimagh on Sunday last March 13th.

For the tenth year back to back Westport AC won the Track and Field Club of the Year award, proudly collected by Gerry Kilroy on behalf of the club.

AVIVA Schools Cross Country

The National Aquatic Centre in Abbotstown Dublin was the venue for the AVIVA All Ireland schools Cross Country Championships last Saturday March 12th and Westport AC Athletes had great success.  Dearbhail McNamara came 39th  in the Minor Girls.  In the Intermediate Girls Ellen Moran came home in 13th place.  The Intermediate Boys saw Con Doherty taking 16th place, David Harper 24th and Oisin McNulty 97th all contributing to Rice College just missing out on the medals, coming in fourth ...

Westport Success at Connaught Indoor Championships

Westport Athletic Club athletes travelled to Nenagh recently for the Connaught Indoor Championships. Twenty two of our athletes qualified for the National Championships.

In the U12 Girls Kate Chambers won Bronze in the Shot Putt and Ellen Noonan took Bronze in the High Jump.  In the U12 Boys Patrick Chambers came First in the 600m with Cian McAllister coming Third in the same race.

Connacht Indoors March 5th and 6th

The Connacht indoors will take place this coming weekend in Nenagh. Each event costs €3.

A bus will leave the octagon at 7a.m. on Saturday for anyone interested in travelling. Cost €5. Prepayment for bus is necessary. Payment can be made on Tuesday or Thursday evening at training.

We are also looking for parents to travel on the bus.

Reminder: All athletes must have a Westport A.C. singlet to compete in. Anyone looking to purchase a new one can do so at the track this week for €15.
