WESTPORT GIRLS WIN TWO ALL IRELAND BRONZE MEDALS

Westport Athletics Club competed in the second weekend of the Woodie’s DIY All Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships, which took place last Saturday and Sunday in the Tullamore Harriers stadium.

On Saturday in the field events the best performance went to Cathy McKenna who had an excellent throw of 32.85m in the U19 girls Javelin winning the bronze medal. Jennifer Chambers came seventh in the U14 girls Shot Putt with a fine throw of 10.28m.  In the U14 boys discus Cian O’Farrell came eleventh with a throw of 21.55m.  Daniel Lavelle also had a good day coming fifth in the U17 boys discus with a throw of 32.83m.  On the track the performance of the day went to Ashling Heneghan coming third in the U18 girls 3k walk in a brilliant time of 15.41.2 just 3.5 seconds behind second.  There were other fine performances from Alannah Gannon in the U14 girls 200m, Diarmuid mcGreal in the U17 boys 200m and Matthew O'Malley in the U15 boys 2k walk.

Sunday saw the U14 girls relay team of Alannah Gannon, Ruth Gallagher, Jennifer Chambers and Tara McGreevy just short of making the final.  Well done to all our athletes!

Corrib Mask Half Marathon Challenge

The race is AAI registered and is a Jones measured course with chip timing.
Perfect training run for Dublin City Marathon or National half marathon finals in Athenry the following week.
Entry Fee 30 Euro
Prize fund for all categories presentation at 2pm.

Water stops on route.

Woodie’s DIY All Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships

Westport Athletics Club competed in the Woodie’s DIY All Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships, which took place last Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th July in the Tullamore Harriers stadium.

On Saturday Alannah Gannon literally ‘fell at the last hurdle’ in the U14 girls 80m hurdles, but this did not stop this fantastic athlete coming back on Sunday and winning gold in the U14 High Jump (jointly with Aisling Keady-Cummin from Craughwell AC) with a brilliant jump of 1.54m.  In the U1...

All Ireland championships held at Cork Institute of Technology.

Westport Athletics Club U9-U11 boys and girls competed very successfully recently in the All Ireland championships held at Cork Institute of Technology.

The U9 girls were well represented by Laura Moran and Roisin O'Brien in the 300m, while Maggie Chambers and Emily Chambers teamed up in the long jump.  Harry Sheridan, together with Niall McGreal joined forces in the U9 boys ball thow, while Niall teamed up with Tomas Gannon in the U9 boys 300m. Westport Athletics Club U13-U19 had outstanding success in the Connaught Outdoor championship

Kate O’Malley had a great start to the day winning gold in the U13 girls javelin, followed by a silver in the shot putt.  The U14 girls relay team consisting of Alannah Gannon, Ruth Gallagher, Jennifer Chambers, Tara McGreevy and Aoife O’Brien ran brilliantly to bring home the gold.  Alannah Gannon continued her fantastic day winning silver in the U14 girls hurdles and taking first place in both the high jump and 200m.  Ruth Gallagher ran her heart out and won gold in the U14 girls 80m sp...
