Adam Sheridan Retains All-Ireland Title

August 11, 2014
Adam Sheridan, Westport AC retains his All-Ireland title winning the U13 Shot Putt(2kg) with a phenomenal throw of 14.03m, over 2m ahead of the silver medal winner and a full 1.13m ahead of his previous personal best(PB).  This performance, added to Adam’s Gold in the All-Ireland Indoor Championships earlier this year, concludes an excellent year for this young athlete.

The GloHealth All-Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships were held in Tullamore over three weekends in July and Westport AC competed in 22 events over those competitions.

Westport’s best track performance came from Cillian Heaney, who pulled out all the stops, winning a silver medal in the U13 boys 600m, in a fantastic time of 1:37.87, wiping almost 8 seconds off his PB. He also came sixth in the 80m sprint (11.14s).  Cillian is definitely one to watch in the future.

Jennifer Chambers won her first All-Ireland medal taking the bronze in the U16 girls Discus (1kg), throwing an excellent 28.08m, adding almost a full 5m to her current PB. Jennifer also came ninth in the Shot Putt (3kg) with a fine throw of 9.81m.

Three of Westport’s athletes just fell short of winning a medal. Saoirse O’Brien took 4th place in the U13 girls 600m, running an excellent race in a time of 1:46.41.  Luke Dawson also took 4th in the U14 boys 1500m, in 4:41.34, taking a full 11s off his PB.  Kate O’Malley, for the third successive year, has come 4th in the U15 Shot Putt throwing a new PB of 10.22m just 0.17m short of the bronze medal.  These athletes will undoubtedly be on the podium in the near future.

Oisin Ryall had an impressive performance in the U13 boys long jump, with a fine jump of 4.34m, adding a full 30cm to his PB.  Oisin also came 7th in the U13 boys 600m, racing home in a time of 1:44.52, almost 4 seconds improvement on his previous PB. Claire O’Malley took 8th place, with a PB throw of 17.66m in the U14 girls Discus (0.75kg), an excellent performance in what was Claire’s first All-Ireland Championship.

Aisling Halpin Fahey took 8th place in the U14 girls Long Jump, jumping an excellent 4.46m adding 11cm to her PB.  Aisling also competed in both the 80m sprint (11.48s) and the 200m (28.13s). Ava Lynne Kane competed in both the U14 girls 80m sprint (11.39s) and 200m (28.65s).

In the U16 girls 1500m Aoife O’Brien came home in 10th place in a fine time of 5:10.87, knocking almost 12s off her current PB.  Sorcha McAllister took 8th place in the U17 girls 1500m in a time of 5:13.81.

There were also some fine performances from the relay teams. The U12 boys team of Shane O'Malley, Malcolm Mac Evilly, Harrison Quinn and Ted Horan, the U13 boys team of Cillian Heaney, Oisin Ryall, Kian Moore, Rossa McAllister and Tommy Scahill, the U14 girls team of Aisling Halpin Fahey, Ava Lynne Kane, Anna O'Riain, Kate Moran and Saoirse O’Brien and the U14 boys team of Sean Doherty, Luke Dawson, Thomas Devaney and Cillian Heaney.
