Westport AC Host National "B" Championship

Westport AC was so proud to host the National "B" Championships in the amazing grounds of Westport House on Sunday 9th February.  The event went off in style with over 1,000 athletes entered and thousands of spectators enjoying the fast paced racing in the amazing grounds of Westport House on a crisp dry February day. The feedback from Athletics Ireland has been amazing, it was a great day for Westport AC.

We would like to thank The Hughes Family and all the staff of Westport House for all their support for this event which has been lauded by clubs the length and breath of the country. 

A special mention has to go to the Subcommittee that worked so hard over the past few weeks and months to pull it all together, Angela Corduff, Sean Sweeney, Ann Marie Walsh, Irene Riordan, and Padraig Corduff, who all took on their roles without any hesitation and worked tirelessly to make sure everything got done. 

Thank you to all our juvenile members who were not afraid to pull up their sleeves and get stuck in. From collecting litter, manning the information tent, running back and forth with results, on clickers counting the spectators, and delivering soup and sandwiches to our volunteers and anything else they were asked to do. Every child we asked to do a job did it without a word of complaint and was only eager to help. It is a credit to those children and their parents.

There were volunteers from so many groups, our own Westport AC athletes, parents, coaches and committee members, Westport GAA and Westport LGFA and St Anne's Boxing Club.  We are indebted to Padraig Corduff and Corduff Travel for all their assistance with organising the parking for the day and the local schools along with Westport GAA and Westport United for making their car parks available to us.

It was lovely to see all the club athletes competing on home soil and a huge congrats to all those who won medals some their first National Medal and where better to win it than in their own hometown.


Westport AC is the largest Juvenile Athletics club in Mayo and the seventh largest in Ireland in the latest Athletics Ireland club membership report.  Out of the 366 affiliated clubs with Athletics Ireland, Westport AC is currently 20th overall.

We currently have 432 juvenile members, in September 2023 we had 288 juvenile members so a growth of 50% in just over a year with total club membership of 550 and climbing each week. 


This growth is in no small part to our wonderful team of coaches who are nurturing our athletes and giving them space to enjoy getting fit in a fun way. 


We have also had huge investment in our facilities in Horkan's Hill and are eagerly awaiting a tartan track in the coming months. 


We are forever indebted to the generosity and support of so many wonderful businesses and individuals in our Community.

Mayo Indoor Athletic Championships

The C & C Cellular/Vodafone Mayo Indoor Athletic Championships were held in Claremorris at the weekend.  Over five hundred and forty athletes competed in a variety of events – the largest number to compete to date. Click HERE for Results

TWO MORE TEAM GOLD NATIONAL MEDALS FOR WESTPORT AC

Westport AC Boys U13 team and Boys U15 team both won Gold Team medals at the GloHealth National Novice and Juvenile Uneven Age Cross Country Championships held in Santry on December 7th.  Overall, Westport secured three team medals and four individual medals, together with numerous county medals and one provincial on the day.

WESTPORT AC BOYS WIN TWO ALL IRELAND TITLES

Westport Athletic Club juvenile athletes travelled in huge numbers to the All Ireland Novice and Juvenile Uneven Age Cross Country Championships on Sunday, 7th of December in Santry Demesne, Dublin.  The U13 boys(2500m) and the U15 boys(3500m) teams put in exceptional performances both winning National titles.  Cillian Heaney led the U13 boys team home taking fourth place in the huge field of almost 160 athletes and winning an individual medal. Gold Medals for Westport AC Athletes in All-Ireland Inter-County Even Ages Cross Country

Westport AC U-12 athlete Malcolm McEvilly and the Westport AC Boys U-14 team won Golds in the GloHealth Inter-County Cross Country Even Ages Championships held in Dundalk on 23rd November. Overall, Westport secured two team medals and four individual medals.

Connaught Uneven Ages Cross Country 2014 Westport House

Westport Athletic Club hosted the 2014 Connacht Uneven Ages Cross Country Champion-ships in the beautiful grounds of Westport House.  The majority of the almost 650 athletes agreed it was a terrific challenging course, and apart from one horrendous shower the weather held up nicely for the day.

WESTPORT AC DOMINATES AT CONNACHT EVEN AGED CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

With four individual provincial titles, three silver and one bronze individual medal on top of four team gold gold, Westport AC athletes were the ones to watch at the Connacht Even Aged Cross Country Championships on Sunday 2nd November. Today's achievements are nothing short of exceptional. Today Westport athletics club dominated the Connaught cross country championship. Green n red at the cutting edge of almost every race . It is a credit to every athlete regardless of a good race or a poor one (we learn, work , improve and the last will become first) and coaches without whom nothing is possible.
