Westport AC Host National "B" Championship

Westport AC was so proud to host the National "B" Championships in the amazing grounds of Westport House on Sunday 9th February.  The event went off in style with over 1,000 athletes entered and thousands of spectators enjoying the fast paced racing in the amazing grounds of Westport House on a crisp dry February day. The feedback from Athletics Ireland has been amazing, it was a great day for Westport AC.

We would like to thank The Hughes Family and all the staff of Westport House for all their support for this event which has been lauded by clubs the length and breath of the country.

A special mention has to go to the Subcommittee that worked so hard over the past few weeks and months to pull it all together, Angela Corduff, Sean Sweeney, Ann Marie Walsh, Irene Riordan, and Padraig Corduff, who all took on their roles without any hesitation and worked tirelessly to make sure everything got done.

Thank you to all our juvenile members who were not afraid to pull up their sleeves and get stuck in. From collecting litter, manning the information tent, running back and forth with results, on clickers counting the spectators, and delivering soup and sandwiches to our volunteers and anything else they were asked to do. Every child we asked to do a job did it without a word of complaint and was only eager to help. It is a credit to those children and their parents.

There were volunteers from so many groups, our own Westport AC athletes, parents, coaches and committee members, Westport GAA and Westport LGFA and St Anne's Boxing Club.  We are indebted to Padraig Corduff and Corduff Travel for all their assistance with organising the parking for the day and the local schools along with Westport GAA and Westport United for making their car parks available to us.

It was lovely to see all the club athletes competing on home soil and a huge congrats to all those who won medals some their first National Medal and where better to win it than in their own hometown.

Westport AC is the largest Juvenile Athletics club in Mayo and the seventh largest in Ireland in the latest Athletics Ireland club membership report.  Out of the 366 affiliated clubs with Athletics Ireland, Westport AC is currently 20th overall.

Snapshots of the April 2024 and September 2023 reports showing below.

We currently have 432 juvenile members, in September 2023 we had 288 juvenile members so a growth of 50% in just over a year with total club membership of 550 and climbing each week.

This growth is in no small part to our wonderful team of coaches who are nurturing our athletes and giving them space to enjoy getting fit in a fun way.

We have also had huge investment in our facilities in Horkan's Hill and are eagerly awaiting a tartan track in the coming months.

We are forever indebted to the generosity and support of so many wonderful businesses and individuals in our Community.

Posted by Westport Athletic Club on Friday, November 14, 2014,
Westport Athletic Club hosted the 2014 Connacht Uneven Ages Cross Country Champion-ships in the beautiful grounds of Westport House.  The majority of the almost 650 athletes agreed it was a terrific challenging course, and apart from one horrendous shower the weather held up nicely for the day.
A big thank you to Westport House owners and staff for allowing us to use their facilities and providing food and refreshments on the day.

The U11 girls were first into action in the 1500m race. Roisin O...
