Westport Juveniles athletes travelled to the All Ireland Indoor Track and Field Championship which was held recently in the new international indoor athletics arena at Athlone IT. This was a very high standard event where only the top three finishers in the recently held provincial indoors championship qualified to compete. The top juvenile athletes from the four provinces of Ireland competed against each other over the two days of the event and Westport athletes put in some great performances against Irelands finest.
Ashling Henaghan continued her success of recent years winning the bronze in the U19 girls walks in a brilliant time of 7mins 50.14 secs. Other fine track performances include Saoirse O'Brien 7th in the U12 girls 600m(1.55.44), Ava-Lynne Kane 8th in the U13 girls 600m(1.53.00),
Aoife O'Brian 10th in the U15 girls 1000m walk(6.38.17), Jason Gavin in the U19 boys 400m and Ellen Moran 4th in the U19 girls 1500m(5.09.99).
There were also some excellent field performances including Saoirse O'Brien 11th in the U12 girls high jump(1.15m), Ellen Noonan 10th in the U14 girls high jump(1.30m), Kate O'Malley 6th in the U14 girls shot putt(10.4m), Saoirse Ludden 10th in the U16 girls long jump(4.38m)and 5th in the high jump(1.50m), Adam Sheridan 4th in the U12 boys shot putt(8.67m) and Oisin Ryall 9th in the U12 boys high jump(1.25m).
The final day of indoor competition takes place on Saturday April 6th in Athlone IT.
