The Woodie’s DIY even age inter county cross country championships were held in the superb surroundings of Tattersalls in Ratoath, County Meath last Sunday and 22 athletes from Westport AC competed. Luckily most of the heavy rain fell in the days leading up to the championships and the day itself remained dry. Underfoot conditions after such heavy rainfall meant the going was very tough.

The first and largest race of the day, fielding 168 athletes was the U12 2000m where Saoirse O'Brien, who was running out of age, ran a marvellous race, winning an individual medal coming home in 12th place.  Saoirse was followed by Keri McHale, Sarah Staunton, Anna O'Riain, Lara Kennedy-Jones and Ava-Lynn Kane, who all ran well in an extremely tough competition.

Next up were the U12 boys 2000m, fielding 167 athletes, where Luke Dawson ran a brilliant race coming home in 5th place, winning both an individual medal and a Connaught bronze medal. Luke's teammates Cillian Heaney, Sean Doherty, Patrick Grady, Donal O'Buachalla and Sean Corcoran all ran a good race.

In the U14 girls 3000m Aoife O'Brien represented the club and performed well. The U14 boys 3000m was next and Westport was well represented by Marley Hoban, Ben Walshe, Alex O'Riain and Cian Rowe in a very competive race.

The U18 girls 4000m saw the team of Ellen Moran, Ashleigh Currid, Aisling Henaghan and Stephanie Henaghan ran a fine race.  In the U18 boys 5000m Keelan Moran ran very well on his first outing for the club.

The All-Ireland uneven ages championships will be held in Adamstown, Co. Wexford on Sunday December 9th.
